How We Pick

PrepPick is a short list, not a catalog. We don't test products ourselves. We read independent reviewers who do, list the product they ranked first, and check the price by hand.

What earns a spot

• Top pick first. Each category leads with the product a named reviewer (Wirecutter, Outdoor Gear Lab, Serious Eats, Bob Vila, The Prepared, Outdoor Life and others) ranked #1, followed by at most two runners-up.
• We name the source. Every pick links to the review that recommended it, so you can read the testing yourself.
• Brand picks are labeled. Where no independent review exists, a pick is marked "Troy's pick" and, where possible, shows the store's own customer rating.
• Verified prices. Every price was read by hand off the product's own page and is shown with the date it was checked. Current range: Oct 15–20, 2026. Prices and stock change often, so check the store before you buy.
• Price ranges. When a product's price changes with size, color, pack count or store, the card shows the lowest and highest prices we found on reputable US stores, what option each one is, and a link to each. The button still goes to the store we think is the best place to buy.
• Swaps are explained. When a reviewer's pick is sold out or discontinued, we list the closest in-stock equivalent and say so on the card.
• Firearms list one popular pick per caliber and carry the FFL and legal note.
• No paid placements. A brand can't buy a spot. Affiliate links, if we add them, never change which products we list.

What we don't do

• We don't run our own lab tests or field tests.
• We don't list products that make unsafe or unproven health claims, such as drinking chlorine dioxide or "zapper" devices.
